Dr. Judith Ockene, PhD, MEd, MA will talk about the promotion and advancement of women in academia and the work she has done in that area.

Dr. Judith K. Ockene is Professor of Population and Quantitative Health and Professor of Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS). Prior to working at UMMS she was a lecturer in the Department of Behavioral Science at the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Ockene’s research and teaching focus is the prevention of illness and disability and the promotion of health and quality of life for individuals and communities. In 2000 she was the first women to be awarded an Endowed Chair at UMMS. In 2003 Dr. Ockene was appointed as the behavioral psychologist for the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF). At that time she also was also elected as the President of the Society of Behavioral Medicine (SBM). In 2013 Dr. Ockene was awarded the Chancellor’s Medal for Distinguished Service in the Advancement and Promotion of Women at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She has received awards as a distinguished scientist and as a distinguished mentor by SBM.
