Virtual Meeting via Zoom

Looking for a good read while staying out of the cold? Now is the perfect time to pick up Disability Visibility! This anthology of contemporary personal essays from the disabled community, edited by disability advocate Alice Wong, is a great way to gain insight into the lived experience of many different kinds of folks in your community and to think about your own lived experiences. While you are at it, mark your calendars for the SJMC-hosted book discussion:

Thursday, February 29 – Being
Thursday, March 7 – Becoming
Thursday, March 14 – Doing
Thursday, March 21 – Connecting

All sessions will be held on Zoom from 7pm to 8pm. If there is interest, David Radue will add an in-person option in the Fellowship Building. All four events are also open to the broader community. The more, the merrier. That includes neighbors nearby as well as friends and family further afield. The book is available in print or audio formats, and there is an adaptation for young adults as well. There is also a fascinating plain language translation designed to increase accessibility and reduce language barriers. For the book club, we will leverage questions from Naomi Ortiz’ discussion guide.

You can find more content, including blog posts, excerpts from StoryCorps interviews, and links to the StoryCorp DVP project at the Disability Visibility Project.

To signup, please email David Radue at david.radue@gmail.com. Signups are NOT required, but it will help us gauge interest and prepare for the discussions.
