We remember with great fondness Malcolm Sutherland’s nineteen years of service to our church community. Malcolm’s tenure in Harvard with his wife, Mary Anne, began as a “retirement job” in 1975 and continued until his real retirement in 1994, when our congregation elected him Minister Emeritus. The following is a brief summary of Malcolm’s distinguished career as minister, educator, and peace activist.

  • Executive Vice President, American Unitarian Association (now the UUA), 1958-1960
  • Board of Directors, Unitarian Universalist Service Committee and Beacon Press
  • President and Dean of Faculty, Meadville Lombard Theological School, University of Chicago, 1960-1975
  • Founder, Association of Chicago Theological Schools, 1984
  • President, Honorary Vice President, and Academic Fellow, Institute on Religion in an Age of Science
  • Founder, with Dr. Ralph Burhoe, Center of Advanced Study of Theology and Science, 1964
  • Named Governor of Manchester College, Oxford University, 1968, and Honorary Fellow, 1973
  • Founding Trustee, Dana McLean Greeley Foundation for Peace and Justice
  • Recipient of Distinguished Service Award, International Association for Religious Freedom
  • Officer and Honorary International President, World Conference on Religion and Peace
  • Consultant to Niwano Peace Foundation, Tokyo, 1982-1997
